    THE MAGIC PUMPKIN (curcubita) - from A to Z (actually aleph to taph, which more closely corresponds to the first letters of each comment, and, of course, there are a few english letters missing).

    A - Our ancestors remembered the zucchini and watermelons they ate in Egypt and longed for them when they were in the desert. (Numbers יא, ה) They probably intended cucumbers or maybe it was Fakus. In any case they are all members of the Cucurbitaceae family.

    the various small ones and even the zucchinis all belong to the same botanical genus, sometimes even to the same species.

  • Happy Hugging Eggplants

    Eggplants!
    Eggplant is number two, after coriander, on the list of vegetables that are either loved or hated. There is a Turkish eggplant dish called "Imam Abayeldi", which means "the imam fainted" -- because it was so delicious.
    Some of you have asked, in the beginning of our correspondence, what to do with vegetables that we don't really know how to use, like eggplant. Some like it grilled, roasted, steamed - Yes steamed!, also fried, pickled, chopped, sliced, cut and stuffed.

  • Sweet Melons-Full of Light!

    Shavoa Tov, Dear freinds,

    A Middle Eastern proverb says that one who fills his stomach with melons, fills it with light - this is because melons are blessed.

    Yes, melons, which are members of the respected Cucurbitaceae family of gourds. In general, this family consists of about 825 species, including several that grow wild in our country.
    The Cucurbitaceae are usually annuals, which means that they complete a life cycle in one season.
