I'm sorry I replaced some of your lettuces last week, they were really not up to standard...
A summer question - how do you keep your greens fresh and crispy and not limp and wilty?
A short cold rinse and a good drying (or not even rinse at all), wrap in cloth or thick paper to capture the moisture. Close in a plastic bag and store in the fridge until used.
If you're not planning to use them in the next couple of weeks, here is some advice from Shoshana from Jerusalem:
"Lately I started sun-drying the leaves that I didn't use, such as mint, parsley and celery.

The garden is all summer !! There is one last cycle of root celery, that will be given out this week. I was hoping it would grow bigger, but it has it's own opinion... My apologies (great opportunity for chicken soup with celery - the last until next winter).
I'm attaching the water-conserving bottle-in-in-toilet-tank trick, for those who didn't understand what I was talking about.
This week I sowed more in trays: tomatoes - cherry-Perry - small & pear shaped; chard - a bit too late; and Squash - large, small, round, flowery, green, orange, yellow, spaghetti.להמשך קריאה >>
The pumpkins are starting to spread out!!!
Last week was all about hanging up the climbing plants, which we are trying to do quickly because we are late. So, to speed the process, I bought a "helmania" (a hand-held thing to bang large spikes into the ground), and we are suspending easy-to-climb fencing from them. I really like working by hand, but this gets the job done easier, better and faster.

Squash and Tripoli Pumpkins are already climbing.
The Shavuot Holiday came at a perfect time. It is really the transition between spring and summer and all of the plants in the garden are changing. There are lots of cute little first-fruits all over the garden. Each new fruit is beautiful and exciting and I'm eager to send it to you, but there aren't enough for all the boxes. These first-fruits are currently mixed with fruits from the greenhouses, but soon enough they will take over the box !
We're continuing with the round, tasty zucchinis.להמשך קריאה >>

When we grow plants we know that if conditions are better, they will be healthier and more immune to diseases and vermins.
In nature, there is a certain balance between all the living beings. Each pest has its own natural enemy, so it's very important to aim towards that balance. Often, we treat all insects as vermins, but in fact, some of them are essential to us.
With the weather getting warmer, the growth in the garden (Plants and creatures alike) is quickening. Since all of you receive from the garden (vegetables, mud, rain and various insects occasionally) I thought I'd write about those creatures a bit.
It has been a long time since I have written to you and there have been many changes and developments in the garden. Click on the following link to see photos taken by Dear Marjolaine. http://maggiesgarden.shutterfly.com/
In the last few weeks, sunlight and warmth have burst forth; spring has arrived like a Pesach gift. Everything is now running at speed. Winter vegetables that are accustomed to a lot of water, low temperature and slow growth are almost gone from the garden and are replaced by summer veggies.להמשך קריאה >>
Hi,להמשך קריאה >>
I just finished picking, packing and delivering and I'm writing again.
Important: This week, because of the Hag, I'll need to know who wants vegetables for next week, by Thursday @ 22:00 ! (It is very helpful if I'm notified on time. If I don't hear from you, you'll get your regular order)
Also remember: After next week's delivery (Sunday Hol HaMoe'd), there will be no deliveries for almost a week and a half.
Anyone who would like a reinforcement of vegetables can write me an email or enter my new ordering system (still very experimental and not at all final) at http://maggiesgarden.
Hi, As I was working in the garden today (What heat!!) I see that there are plants that need to be picked before the beginning of the week and therefore I am updating what is to be included in the boxes. I apologize for the inconvenience, but everything is beginning to burst forth in the garden. Here is the updated list, and, as usual, I hope there will not be further changes. Have a healthy, happy and free holiday. Maggieלהמשך קריאה >>
First of all, in the next couple of weeks of Pesach, the delivery day will be sunday.
What speed in the garden! Vegetables are coming out of the ground, seedlings are being planted and seeds are sprouting at a fast rate.
in these last few days we planted the last cycle of beets, kohlrabi and cabbage, the last winter plants. I couldn't help myself. We will see if they turn out. Since they are winter plants, I planted them in shady places so if summer comes quickly, maybe they will still be able to bear fruit.להמשך קריאה >>
What fun in the garden!
Everything is accelerating because of the amazing sun. It is higher in the sky, it is getting warmer and the days are longer.
This is the time to get rid of the weeds. It is difficult and painful to do this because they are so beautiful and smell so good in the prime of their blooming. But it must be done before they throw their seeds all over the garden and there is no room left for the edible plants that we love.להמשך קריאה >>
