Autumn3-10-11
Important messages:
1. In the two weeks of Sukkot (starting next week) deliveries will be on Mondays and Tuesdays. Those who regularly receive boxes on Wednesdays - will get them on Monday and those who regularly receive boxes on Thursday - will get them on Tuesdays. During these two weeks, changes, additions, and modifications will be accepted until Sunday at 6:00 am only! After that I will probably be outside and therefore will not be able to respond to your requests, so please make sure you make any changes in a timely manner.
2. Additions:
a. I'm continuing to attach the order form on which you may add many products: ecological cleaning materials, crackers, rice cakes, grains, eggs, ‘Adama' breads, legumes, dried fruits, vinegar, olive oil, honey, tahini ......
b. Additions of vegetables, fruits and sprouts can be ordered on line in the website (not on the order form). There is a wide range and variety from many different organic growers and distributors. I am pleased to be able to get these for you. Simply click on the upper left button "כניסה למנויים", enter your email address and password "1111". If this doesn't work, there is a button "Forgot Password". Click the "שכחתי סיסמה" button, and immediately you will receive a new password to your mailbox. Once you are logged into the ordering system you can always change your permanent order. If you entered before the deadline you can also make changes and add things only for this week without changing your permanent order. It is very easy and user friendly - - and I'm here to help you!!
3. I'm reminding you that your actual box may differ from the Teudat Mishloach. Do not worry about this. You will be charged the correct amount. The reason that this may happen is that we prepare the Teudat Mishloach before the actual packing of the boxes, and if there is a change, we update the system later. But we do not write out a new Teudat Mishloach. So, if anything is missing, or there are differences in weights (say you ordered a 3 kg watermelon and it actually weighed 2 kg) we learn about this during the packing and then I update the system after the shipment goes out to you. So there may be a difference between the hand written Teudat Mishloach inside the box, and the actual charge from the system.
Ands now to the garden:
The cycle of life and transitions,
In these days of transition from one year to another we experience our life cycle and in the garden it is even easier to see and feel the endings and beginnings, and also the transitions.
We wish for ourselves and for the environment good things in the new year; we remember what we went through last year and try to learn lessons and improve in the new year.
We identify things we want to put an end to, things we would like to strengthen and also areas in which we would like new beginnings. Our boxes have been dull recently, a bit repetitive and even boring, but soon without us even realizing it, they will vary greatly. They will be filled with roots and wintery leaves. The dry onion, squash, sweet potatoes and potatoes will disappear from our boxes soon and this is the time, if we have had enough of them by now, to save them for the winter where they will not be in our boxes.
The cycle of life - how interesting, challenging and natural!
The garden has a mixture of crops finishing their life cycle, alongside the next generation - the new season.
A Pumpkin ripening alongside a new chard
:
You can see on these tomatoes that they have been through a long rough season of heat, and made it to their destination. They are prepared to seed and finish their lives. Difficult conditions produce special shapes and things
:
The cherry tomatoes and the zucchini have finished in our garden. There are still pumpkins trying to ripen and eggplants and basil have yet to give up, but their growth speed is very very slow. They're approaching their end. They know to do what they know to do only during the summer.
The transition season is always challenging and accompanied by surprises, both for the crops and for us in the kitchen. For example, there may be a new growth spree of something unexpected, next to the extreme tiredness of a certain crop from the long hot season. We, too, although at the start of the season we were eager and excited to receive the bright and strong sunshine, perhaps are tired from the heat and the heat and the heat ....
Near the finishers are the starters, the following crops are winter crops. The lettuce already looks different in the garden. They are still smaller than the winter lettuce, but lush crispy green and fresh. The cool nights and the dew allow it and the Swiss chard, a new participant for the winter, to develop a green growth, beautiful, crunchy and fresh.
These wintery starters are likely to encounter more hard and hot days, and as long as the season remains hot, our boxes will be boring. But maybe we will have surprises because of the difficulty in forecasting what the weather will give us and how the crops respond to the fluctuations.
This is the time for creativity! antipasti of peppers and eggplants; roasted eggplant and peppers in vinegar; baked butternut squash - even without anything on it; baked pumpkin salad with olive oil and garlic .. There are lots of recipes on our website and easily online.
Thanks for your support!
I wish you all a year of creativity, a year of fresh new beginnings, and a year of wonders at our amazing natural cycles
Yours,
Maggie and the garden team
