organic winter spring?

Hi to all,

This week I was going to do the final winter planting and then slowly start to get organized for spring. I had already ordered the last of the seedlings of the Brassicaceae family (broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage) about six weeks ago. Of course, I ordered them without being able to anticipate the current unseasonable weather. Two and a half weeks ago, there were "warnings" of snow in our area. After these two weeks of summery weather, it requires much patience and a calm heart to accept that we may have to skip some of the winter planting and go directly into the spring.

As you know, a sharqiya or khamsin can advance the development of seedlings of winter crops, causing an early bloom. Usually, in vegetables, flowering comes at the expense of the development of the leaf, root or bud that we want to eat. So, in these erratic circumstances, we try to anticipate as best we can. Maybe it is a mistake? Perhaps it is just right! Who knows?

Accordingly, this week we will continue as if it is winter. We will plant a few winter crops, but we will also carefully begin preparations and planting the first crops of spring (with great hope that there won't be a frost that will limit their future ability to develop). In short, with no reliable inside information, we're not putting all of our herbs in one basket.

So maybe we will start to say goodbye to all the wintery leaves and roots .... or maybe the warmth is temporary and the garden is masquerading as spring for Purim. And on Purim, as anyone who once dressed up as a waitress on roller skates wearing a leotard knows, it still might freeze ....? What a wonderful world we have ...

And as the Bedouins of Sinai sing with such beautiful rhythm (I'm joining them):
Free translation: If the year is a blessed year of rain, we will make it to Adar; and if so far there is a draught, we will see what Adar will bring.
The meaning is that rain in Adar is necessary to ensure the forthcoming produce and protect it from the Hamsinim.

Like my little boy sings so beautifully:
"So go the planters
A radish and turnip in their hand... "

Have great week and a happy Purim. May we know to have fun in our costumes and remove all the masks.

Yours,
Maggie
