Moringa, my love…
Moringa Oleifera is an evergreen tree from tropical regions, which probably originated in India. There are records of ancient Egyptians and Greeks using it as well.
It is a family relative of the Moringa Peregrina which grows in Israel near Ein Gedi; perhaps that is why it is also resistant to drought and to excessive heat. In our cold weather it would die or go into a winter hibernation and lose its nutritional leaves.
Moringa Oleifera arrived in Israel with immigrants from India and workers from Asia, where it is known as a very rich food. There its name means something like "miracle tree" or "tree of life". It is mentioned in Ayurveda (Indian medicine theory) as a cure for some 300 diseases !!
All parts of the tree are edible – leaves, flowers, pods, seeds, trunk bark and roots. The green leaves are eaten fresh, cooked or dried. When drying, the leaves powder may be preserved for many months without refrigeration and without loss of nutritional value. The leaves have a delicate aroma and taste of green. A great way to consume greens.
It is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals, calcium, 46 antioxidants and 36 Anti-inflammatory agents… and so, in the countries in which it is indigenous, it is consumed regularly by children, women who are pregnant and after birth periods and by anyone weak for whatever reason.
David’s Moringa (ours ☺): "is grown organically in Dead Sea soil in the Ein Tamar area. Due to the high salinity in the soil and the hot and dry weather in this region, our Moringa grows richer in vitamins and minerals than any Moringa grown anywhere else in the country or imported from abroad."
It is especially rich with high values of vitamin E, vitamin D, calcium, iron, potassium and protein. It helps against infections, anti- viral and anti-bacterial and anti-allergenic ….
Moringa is known to treat infections in general, it strengthens the immune system, it is a gastric cleaner and kills parasites and toxins, increases milk production among mothers, lowers blood sugar and thyroid TSH level, treats gout, lupus…. The list goes on…
Here are some articles on Moringa
Note: Those taking warfarin and those with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar due to excessive insulin) should not use it!
To health!
May our vacation continue to be calm and not too hot.
Yours,
Maggie and the garden staff
