Hey everyone, good week!
So how do we know that summer is completely here?
1. When I go to work at 5:00am and it is already light!
2. When we get a variety of beautiful, colorful and fragrant organic fruits – Cherries, apricots, melons, watermelons, peaches, nectarines, guavas and even loquat – Very exciting after a long citrus period (although I already miss them).
The scents fill the packing house and the shop – Several times someone has walked in and said "Wow, I love that smell?" And when I inquired whether it was "The guavas"? (I’m concerned that it bothers those who do not like guavas), they answered immediately: "This smell of vegetables, fruits, earth…"
I think we really managed to bring some of the garden to the Castel (10 Hayetzira Street, Mevasseret Zion). Come visit!!
Apart from the smells, most of the summer fruits come in bright red and orange colors and one really feels like just biting into them right away :). And every bite is juicy and full of juice and flavor… Yummy. Summer.
The colors of the organic fruits and vegetables show us that they contain pigments, and everything in them has health benefits for us.
So a little bit about all this orange and red pigment, which is very appropriate for Lag B’Omer:
The carrot (this week our organic carrot was especially sweet and tasty), loquat, pumpkin (the summer is the season of organic pumpkins, so now we'll see them a lot), apricots, peaches, melon, yams, papaya, peppers, corn!!!! Persimmon, dates and the disappearing citrus fruits… and soon mangoes too
All that is orange, is full of phytochemicals, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and other carotenoids. The orange carotenoids are a source of vitamin A, which is essential for our immune system. They are also known to fight various cancers.
The summer watermelon is full of lycopene, which is an antioxidant of the strongest and most abundant in our body. Everything that is red contains lycopene (apples, pomegranates, strawberries, cherries – also just arrived!), But sometimes a pigment of a different color covers the red like papaya, which is very rich in lycopene as well 🙂
Tomatoes are the queens of lycopene, cause they have the most, and we typically have cherry tomatoes that are called “lycopene”. These contains so much lycopene that they look brown. Now, the summer is the time of the organic tomatoes.
So … enjoy the colors and fragrances (also of the bonfire …)
May it be a juicy, quenching and colorful week.
To health!
Yours,
The garden team and Maggie
