Do you feel it, too?
The July-August period is called the "cucumber season," as a nickname for a season in which nothing, but nothing, happens. In the same way you could call this season "the watermelon season," or "the mango season," or "the sad greens season" – which would not change the fact that the variety of organic fruits and vegetables is quite limited. At the peak of this hot season, as in every year, the garden begins its summer hibernation. Just like the winter hibernation in which nature curls up, shrinks, tries with all its might to maintain minimal output until more favorable conditions arrive. In cold Europe, winter is very challenging for crops and fresh produce, while in Israel we have to deal with the heat. When there's snow or a spontaneous hail that comes down on the garden every few years, there is damage that is relatively manageable, but with this heat, from the peak of summer until the signs of autumn appear, there is not much to do. We just have to wait for the season to change. Fortunately, there are many good things at this time, like mangoes and sweet pears.
This “siesta” is typical of the garden at this time of year. Of the variety of colored peppers, only one representative remains; this is also true for the tomatoes. Even the large gourd family has already "done its part" and it is hard to find watermelon, melon and zucchini. The greens are sad (of course they are sad, who would want to stand on thin stems with delicate leaves spread out all day in this heat?), and there are no root vegetables either. They are both winter crops. We do manage to grow them in the summer but not at the peak of summer in such heat.
Of course, I am only talking about "organic crops". Somehow in conventional farming (it really shouldn’t be called that) they do it, but I don’t even want to hear how they do it and get annoyed. The season of organic vegetables and fruit has grown longer in recent years, and for me it’s long enough. A little patience J. It is even good to yearn for crops and then get them in their season when they're good and ready, and we can taste and see the difference.
In short, it is a challenge. Those who have been with us for years know that this is how it is every year – during the peak of summer, the variety is low (but juiciness and sweetness are high). We have to be patient and understand that after every shortage comes abundance, and it is even more fun to receive it after we have waited so long.
Besides, in fact, not everything is so gloomy. We have a wonderful supply of fruit for this season, which is suitable for the season and therefore also precisely what the body needs. There is a lot of amazing and delicious mangoes, organic pineapple (there is one customer who immediately runs over and puts it in her box first thing when she enters the store), an amazing variety of pumpkins, tasty-juicy-sweet pears, pomegranates and crispy apples.
Speaking of apples, prepare for the apple with honey season! Rosh Hashanah is not far away, and if you feel like giving someone a tasty, organic gift to raise their spirit, we have a number of ideas:
- organic pineapple, apple and pomegranate packed in a basket;
- a basket of natural beauty products (deodorant, shampoo, hand lotion, sunscreen);
- a garden calendar;
In short, even now there is plenty that is suitable for right now!
To health!
Yours,
Maggie and Team
