.Take a strawberry

Take a good close look at it.

If you look at it really closely, you can probably also feel its amazing smell, which makes all parts of the mouth crave the expected bite to come. But wait a minute, hold all desires.

Do you see all these seeds, crowded on the surface of the strawberry? Have you ever wondered why the strawberry seeds are located on the skin of the fruit while most other fruits contain the seeds inside them?

If you eat mostly organic strawberries, you may have never lingered to ponder this point, as it is hard to resist eating organic strawberries that smell so good, from the moment they visible and at arm’s reach.

But the truth is, there is indeed a reason for this (for the location of the seeds, that is).

The strawberry itself is not a fruit, but a “swelling”: a stem that ends in a thickened part.

The seeds themselves are a extension of the ovary, and they seated on their supporting substrate. In most other fruits this is the other way round. The fruit itself is the ovary and the seeds are located inside. OK, that’s it, now we can eat.

The strawberry was introduced to most of the civilized world thanks to one French king, who approx. 250 years ago, in Versailles, had a desire to explore new plants and fruits.

The fruit arrived in Israel fashionably late, in the 1960s from California and has since undergone many enhancements and developments.

It’s delicate and romantic flowers may reveal to us that it is a member of the Rosaceae family, therefor the pear, apple, apricot and even quince are family relatives. In Hebrew the mulberry sounds related, but it is not!

Although Israel excels at exporting many other fruits, strawberries are grown mainly in the US (more than a million tons a year!), Russia, Spain and Turkey, with the export leader being Spain.

Strawberries contain a very impressive amount of antioxidants – much more than other fruits. 10 times the average amount contained in vegetables, and 40 times that in grains.

Thanks to its antioxidant content, it is considered a successful partner in protecting the body against malignant diseases, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other awful undesirable disorders.

Strawberries also contain a good amount of vitamin C that protects the body from the effects of free radicals and supports the immune system, as well as B vitamins. Other substances that can be found in strawberries are ligands, tannins and phenolic acids that also protect the body from free radicals.

No two strawberry taste alike – one has more sour aromas, and the other is rather rich in sweet flavors. I never get tired of munching fresh strawberries, washed and untampered, just as they are.

It is even better not to slice them, and eat them as fresh as possible, since the vitamin C with which they are blessed reacts when the strawberries are exposed to oxidation, whether by time or by processing with heat and etc.).

If you still feel like varying – Kale is a great salad partner with strawberries, as the strawberries provide the sour / sweet flavors that blend with the crunch that the kale brings with it.

You can also combine pomelo slices, replace the kale with baby leaves and sprinkle almonds or pecans on top. You can of course combine strawberries in the classic combination: with yogurt and granola.

And if the strawberries happened to wilt and lose their freshness while still in the fridge and they are no longer fun to eat – jam is a classic solution. Everyone knows that there is nothing like homemade jam.

Yours.
