The squill (chazav in Hebrew) is blooming and summer is escaping,
When the days get shorter towards the end of summer (the squill tells us that this is happening), the squill sends up a flower stalk, erect and proud, a meter or two tall and so begins its seed production phase.
This flower stalk is the only part of the squill plant that is outside of the ground. It has no leaves.
You can see in came up in the Purslane bed, next to Leeks. Also view the shading, we do try to help and the resting beds that are getting ready for the next growing cycle.
Also during this period the veggie baskets are full of juicy "hard" produce, that are actually fruits. They are fruits because they contain seeds, like the various gourds: cucumbers, melons, watermelons, zucchini; also tomatoes, eggplants, beans, okra…. they are all fruits in the botanical sense (more about the differences between fruits and vegetables in a newsletter I wrote)
Heat! Heat causes dry facts both in our garden and on our plate!
In this season, as the squill shows, there are few leafy plants, because leaves prefer to stay inside the cool of the earth and come out in a more suitable season, like autumn or winter. Accordingly, in summer leafy plants are of a different size and quality than they are during the winter.
At this time of year we should grow specifically summer crops, as only a few of the green leafy crops will survive. It is probably true that in the summer our bodies need more sweet juice than green chlorophyll. Nature is consistent J I hope that you understand the beauty of it and that you accept that the greens will be smaller and with more holes. Please be aware of what they went through before the harvest out there in the heat in the open field and be tolerant of their condition.
We hope that the appearance of the squill really does herald the coming of autumn and that we will soon transition into a season that is less of a battle and less domineering and allows us and our crops to grow strong and flourish (does this sounds political………? 🙂
We wish for all the crops and all the people a week advancing in our desired directions.
Yours,
Maggie and the garden staff.
