• A fine dose of light

When has it become the middle of winter?

A few weeks ago I wrote some hesitant blogs about autumn, about the temperatures that are dropping, and that the rain is just around the corner.

And here, between drizzle and beautiful shower, winter had snuck and is now at its peak.

  • Not only wreaths of laurel

The word “parsley” is derived from Medieval Latin petrosiliumwhich is a combination of two Greek words: “Petra” and “Salinon” - meaning “rock celery”.

The modern word “parsley” is a merger of Old English petersilie (which is identical to the contemporary German word for parsleyPetersilie) and the Old French peresil.

  • Simply radishing

The radishes that arrived at the store this week were so beautifully red and crispy that I immediately decided to write about them.

This decision was later reinforced by the rain that poured down (which makes me happy and makes me want to run around in the mud-filled garden but also to snuggle up inside and just write and rejoice with all the green leaves for the delightful arrival of winter) and also by the fact that the daikon arrived too, and it is beautiful.

  • Cauliflower heads

All this wonderful rain makes me want to make a nice hot soup, or maybe bake something….

Outside, the puddles are gathering, happy snails are feeling their way out of hiding and wandering on the wet glistening asphalt.

The plants in the garden are overjoyed with this abundance, reaching their mud-covered leaves up towards the sky and happily swallowing as much water as they want.

  • And it has nothing to do with artichoke

Is it ginger? A twisted potato? It’s a Jerusalem artichoke!

Out of all the bulbs with misleading names, the Jerusalem artichoke probably wins “The Most Confusing Name” contest.

This is due to the fact that it is in no way related to the artichoke, and its origin has nothing to do with the Holy City.

  • Prepare your warmers

If speaking of signs of winter, and root vegetables – let us not skip the ginger!

Ginger is the ultimate warmer. This is not (only) my opinion - the Chinese conceived the idea hundreds of years ago.

If I properly knew Chinese, I would probably discover an ancient Chinese saying that says something like “From the onset of winter, stock up on fresh ginger and preserve your healthy body”.

  • Exotic roots too

Last time I wrote about root vegetables. This week I would like to present to you another guest to the list: the cassava.

Root vegetables are a welcome and wonderful guest during the winter season: delicious after a short roast in the oven, full of good and warm carbohydrates and pleases the stomach.

  • The root of the matter

What is going on with the rain? It did rain once (and indeed it was a great rain!). But it is already November outside, the sun is still high and heating as if there are no crops farmers gazing at the sky wishing to find any kind of glimpse of rain clouds.

And children that are already beginning to wonder whether this winter will have snow or not.

  • In Cheshvan the Yore came down

The Yore, the first rain - totally danced on my roof! It was a real Jerusalemite rain, a good long one (because it could certainly have come in the form of a few symbolic drops...

After all, this is notEurope here, and rain for longer than half an hour does count! Absolutely!).

It was a proper rain too, it formed puddles with bubbles and everything, even producing the proper scent.

  • Here come the guavas

If you search the web for information on guavas, you will probably find all sorts of pieces of information, such as:

That guava belongs to the myrtle family, and includes many (approximately 100) species of tropical shrubs and small trees; That some of them have funny names, such as the “apple guava”, “pineapple guava” or “strawberry guava”.
