The organic pomegranate
The New Year is already knocking on the door and bringing with it good wishes and hopes. And who can symbolize all these wishes better than the organic pomegranate, symbolizing in many cultures, including ours, beauty, abundance, fertility and wisdom.
The pomegranate is one of ours, a resident of the region, originated in the Caspian Sea region of Iran, and from there it was distributed to all the countries of the Mediterranean, and so it reached us too. The poet Yaakov Orland wrote the charming poem "The pomegranate tree gave its scent between the Dead Sea and Jericho", but in fact the pomegranate is not a tree; it is a bush, and its blossom and fruits are odorless J
Look at it
It is beautifully red on the outside and full of juice inside. The small red fruits of the pomegranate have many virtues. They are eaten, used in salad dressing and even cocktails and wine preparation.
And what about health? This too is known. The Rambam noted that pomegranate peel can be used to stop bleeding from wounds, pomegranate juice to stop diarrhea and to relieve nausea and hangover headaches. Modern research has shown that the acid in the fruit and its peel helps delay the development of cancer cells and treats high cholesterol and blood pressure.
In Greek mythology, the pomegranate is attributed to Hera who was the Queen of Olympus, wife and sister of Zeus. She was the goddess of marriage, motherhood and childbirth, and patron of married women. Hera, who was noble and sublime, wore a royal crown on her head. And in her hand she used to hold the fruit of the pomegranate, which in ancient Greece was considered a symbol of marriage, fertility, life and death.
It's so delicious, how do you get the grains out of it?
True, it is a bit stubborn and challenges us to peel and get the fruit out of it. But this is not what will prevent us from enjoying its taste and virtues.
The act of separating the pomegranate seeds from its shell has its own special word in Hebrew (פריטת רימון). Two methods for peeling the pomegranate: One way to separate the seeds from the peel is to cut the fruit with a knife, and separate the seeds from the shell with the hands inside a bowl of water. While the shells float in the water, the seeds sink so that the separation is easy and not dirty. Another way is to cut the pomegranate in half, and tap the shell of half the pomegranate until the grains are released from it and fall out.
